Life Random Thoughts

Rough Draft

September 23, 2010

Hi!  My life has been crazy busy that’s why I haven’t blogged in a while.

Last week for school, I was on the High Risk Maternity and that unit was very interesting.  I was so busy on that one just because we were assigned two pts. instead of one.  Oh, and in case those who are reading have no idea what “pt.” stands for, that is the abbreviation for “patient” in the medical field.  Anyway, I took care of two Moms, but 3 fetuses because one of the Moms was expecting twins!  How cool is that?  I got to place the fetal heart monitor and analyze the print outs.  As you would expect, the the printouts for the twins had lines indicating two heartbeats, and etc.  It was really cool!  I thoroughly enjoyed that floor just because there was so much to learn.

This is my last week on the OB rotation and then it’s back to the Med/Surg floors where the dirty population reside.  😉  My last week on OB is in the NICU and I was looking forward to that unit, but alas all of my excitement quickly faded by the end of today.  Surprisingly, the NICU is a really laid-back place.  There is honestly nothing really going on unless something goes absolutely wrong.  The nurses there pretty much do assessments on the babies, monitor them, feed them every 3 hours.  If the families of the babies come to visit, the nurses literally have nothing to do.  For example, if a mother breastfeeds her baby, that means that the nurse is not needed there to formula feed the baby.  Don’t get me wrong, there is definitely a lot more to being a NICU nurse, but for the most part, the atmosphere is pretty laid back.  All in all, it was like babysitting!  There was a lot of feeding and burping babies!  Once again, I may have just been there on a very good day because nothing too exciting was happening.

I am really tired.  I’m going to take a nap, do my prep work, and then finish up this blog entry if I have time.
